Many of you have been eager to find out what's actually going on with the server. This is just a quick announcement to clear that up with everyone. We established that we had a problem; the server memory usage would rapidly accumulate over the space of 30 minutes, eventually causing the whole server to overload. Initially, we were unsure as to what this issue was, but it soon became clear that it must have been an error with the gameserver itself.
This issue which we have been encountering has a vast spectrum of possible causes. This makes it very difficult for us to locate the actual source of the problem manually. Due to our server being operated on Linux, this decreases the choice of software in which we can use to identify the source of the problem.
Some of you have made it seem like we've been idle, waiting for a solution, but this is not the case. We understand that it's taken a long time to even come up with a solution, but we just want the best for us as a community. After a few diligent days last week, it became clear that the chance of fixing the server was unlikely. This has left us with one last, frustrating option; using a back up of the gameserver before the problems occurred.
This is extremely frustrating for myself and Robbie, as it's a step backwards for us on the development front. The last backup which we have is from the end of December in 2011. Obviously, we still have the character files so once we've got the old backup up and running, it shall be undetectable for you as players. Just to make that clear to you, your accounts will be exactly the same, this includes your bank, items, levels and anything else associated with your account. The only difference will be the actual content of the game, which will be hardly detectable.
Since December 2011, we have made several updates such as the RSA algorithm based packet encryption update, which will need to be added to the backup to ensure that the client can login successfully and securely. There are also other updates which will need to be implemented into the gameserver to allow it to work properly with the current client.
I'm setting myself a personal target to get the server online in roughly 24 HOURS. This gives myself enough time to implement RSA source side. I'd also like to take the time to ensure it's explicitly clear that both me and Robbie care for us as a community and it's in our best interests to get it up as soon as possible. I'd also like to apologise for the time in which it's taken us to come up with a solution, but at one point myself and Robbie asked eachother "What shall we do?". I'm glad we're somewhat on a path to recovery as the plans have been set down and PwnXile as a community can get through this.
Thanks for reading, if there's anything which I haven't covered here, just leave a reply and either myself or a staff member will try and help you to the best of our abilities.
